Classroom Kit List

Enviroscape Watershed Model (5th – 12th)

The Non-Point Source Pollution Enviroscape is a model that demonstrates how a watershed works. Students will discover how water travels through a watershed. Students will observe how pollutants can enter communities’ drinking water through run-off and how these toxins flow underground to contaminate groundwater. The model demonstrates how storm water runoff carries pollutants through the watershed to a pond, lake, river, bay, or ocean – and the best management practices to prevent this type of pollution from occurring.

A plastic model showing the topography of a watershed.

Aquifer Model (5th – 12th)

The Aquifer Ground Water Flow Model shows how water moves underground and filters through soil. Demonstrate contaminants seeping from storage tanks, septic systems, etc into ground water. Observe impacts to wells from water-withdrawals. Watch water and pollutants travel downstream, even while underground!. Great when used in conjunction with the Enviroscape watershed model.

Lakeville Debate (6th – 8th)

In this full-on character participation activity, students play the parts of various stakeholders in a community faced with water quality and quantity issues. They debate the wants and needs of each stakeholder and see how our governmental process works.

Don’t Teach Your Trash to Swim (PreK-5th)

Using “fishing poles”, students fish trash out of a “pond”. They must then determine whether what they caught gets sent to a landfill or is recyclable. Included int he kit are also laminated invertebrates, plants and animals that inhabit a pond. Works great after reading the “I Like to Take Care of Things” short story.

Classroom Book Sets

I Like to Take Care of Things (PreK – 3rd) A short book about learning to take responsibility for oneself and our surroundings. Works as a great companion read to the Don’t Teach Your Trash to Swim activity.

Healthy Water Healthy People (6th – 12th) This educator’s guide and student workbook raise awareness and understanding of water quality topics and issues by demonstrating the relationship of water quality to personal, public and environmental health through hands-on activities. This book, produced through Project WET, follows similar teaching principles.

Our Vital Wetlands (9th – 12th) A detailed, highly illustrated full color book describing the many different types of wetlands occurring in Florida and the flora and fauna that call them home.
