The Aquatics Agent will be responsible for fiscal tracking of the grant as well as planning, implementing, and evaluating educational outreach components of U.S. EPA grant X7-96433105-1 in coordination with UF/IFAS Center of Aquatic and Invasive Species. The programs will be based upon the needs of the EPA grant and contribute to maximizing the potential to enhance opportunities to contribute to the solution of social, economic, environmental, and cultural problems. This agent is expected to work with an active and effective advisory committee and develop Aquatic Invasive Weed programs according to the guidelines set forth by the EPA and approved work plan. This is a grant funded position with funding through September 30, 2010.
The Aquatics Agent must have good knowledge of community-based programming and educational principles. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with community agencies, local and federal government in collaborations and partnerships and develop good media relations. The agent will report to the EPA and the University of Florida through approved reporting procedures set by those agencies. The agent will also provide support for the 4-H program in appropriate subject areas. The agent will assume other responsibilities as assigned by the County Extension Director and the District Extension Director. Osceola County is located in Central Florida south of Orlando. It is a very diverse and rapidly growing county with approximately 250,000 residents, of which 44,586 are 4-H age children.
A Bachelor’s degree in Aquatic Plant Management, Limnology, Biology, Plant Science, Natural Resources or a related field, is required. A Master’s degree and experience in aquatic plant management, limnology, biology, public speaking, communications and/or public relations is highly preferred. Candidates without a Master’s degree would be expected to make significant progress toward degree completion within five years. This position academically is a non-permanent status accruing position. The successful candidate should have a strong commitment to education, be creative and innovative in educational program development and delivery. Job requirements include some evening and weekend work, and will involve travel to state, regional, and national professional improvement programs related to program areas. The successful candidate must pass physical examinations, drug screening and background checks as required by Osceola County government. County residence is preferred, but not required. The agent is expected to be an active member of the community.

Description of duties:
Primary responsibilities for this biologist are to assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in development and implementation of activities for Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative (http://myfwc.com/wildlifelegacy/). The Initiative is the long-term, strategic vision developed by the Commission for addressing conservation of all of Florida’s wildlife, including fish and invertebrates. The Initiative is a non-regulatory program designed to combine effective statewide planning with regional partnership development to implement actions at the local level. The employee will conduct Initiative-related activities including assistance with development and implementation of the Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy at a statewide level; as well as regional-level activities, including development and implementation of wildlife management and other projects necessary to address high-priority and emergent conservation issues.
• Conduct wildlife research and monitoring, coordination, and management projects, and tasks associated with such projects. Projects should foster partnerships by creating substantive working relationships with and between employees of local, state and federal agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations (NGO). Projects should be developed with guidance and review from the supervisor, and in coordination with other Commission staff as appropriate.
• Provide technical and other assistance for wildlife research and monitoring, coordination, and management projects. Projects should foster partnerships and facilitate incorporation of conservation activities consistent with Strategy priorities into Commission, other agency, and NGO resource management plans and work plans.
• Assist with monitoring the implementation of the Strategy and with review and revision of the Strategy as needed.
• Conduct partnership development and outreach of Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative. This includes preparing and conducting presentations, talks, and similar functions to increase public support for, and professional use and implementation of the Strategy.
• Provide support and assistance for the Grants program. This includes conducting the process of evaluation for proposed projects, completing administrative requirements to initiate a project, and monitoring funded projects.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Performance of these duties requires that this employee possess a solid working knowledge of the principles of wildlife biology, ecology, and conservation. The employee must have strong skills in organization including time and information management, written and oral communication, customer service, and problem solving. The employee must be experienced in the use of computers for word processing, information management, communications, and data management.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology or wildlife ecology AND one year of professional experience in wildlife management or wildlife research.
